July 2019 Garden News

We started off the month by visiting our son in Agnes Water, it was a nice few day’s relaxing away from the garden.

Coming home we found two stowaways in our car, so our two Grand-daughters stayed with us for a few days.

They had a great time picking the Carambola fruit and even set up a stall to sell them, they did not make much money but had some fun doing it.

We only had one presentation during the month and that was to ‘Roselovers’, we have been there on quite a few occasions and they really appreciate us going there.
My new toy arrived and I put it to good use in the Caladium, Blood Lily and vegetable gardens.
All gardens had bags of Rocky-point ‘Active16’ and cow manure tilled into the soil.

My new photo album arrived and I am very pleased with it.

I dug out the Hippeastrum garden and tilled the soil then Judy replanted all the bulbs.

Of course we went to the Nambour Garden Expo again, perhaps it was just me but I felt it was not as good as usual, did not buy many plants. Parking was a problem as the car park was not open at 8 am and Police told us to move on, half an hour later we finally made it through the gate.

New project all finished and looking good, this was the 6th new project this year.

We are going to open again this year on the 23 and 24 th November. This will be our 18th ‘Open garden’, I wonder if that’s a record?

Our son Scott competed in the World Disabled Water Ski Championships in Norway and against some very stiff opposition won GOLD in the jump.

June 2019 Garden News

A quiet month for us with only one garden presentation which was to ‘The Gap Garden Club’, I did my ‘Bizarre and Beautiful Botanicals’ presentation’ which was well received.
The drive to The Gap is a nightmare as you have to go through the city at peak time, headache from concentrating on the almost two hour drive to get there, anyway they are a nice club and the drive home was much easier.
After a bit of nagging from our Grand Children I have built them a Tree House in the Mango tree, they are loving it.

A big job this month was to empty all my Amorphophallus pots, clean the tubers and store dry, as usual I lost a couple to rot, always seems to happen.

We had a break away from the garden and went to Agnes Water for a few days to see our son.
We had good rain and it was so good to come home to NOT watering.
All our tanks are full which augers well for the rest of the year.

We have decided we will open our garden again on the 23rd and 24th November, this will be our 18th consecutive opening, and yes, I have done many projects this year and have another one planned in July so there will be plenty to see in November.

May 2019 Garden News

May was a very busy month and also very dry, seems that we had of fair share of rain the other month.
Anyway, I am happy as we go into winter with all seven tanks full to the brim.
Our first garden event was a presentation to ‘Clayfield Ascot garden Club’, we have been there a number of times and are always treated well.
I gave my first viewing of my new presentation ‘Aroids, Colour and Orchids in the Giving Garden’, and yes they enjoyed it.
It’s always a worry at first whether the presentation is good enough, so I was quite happy with the reception this one received.
A large Custard Apple tree died, I only noticed it because of the lean, so I dug it out roots and all the filled the hole with eight large barrows of soil, big job. So then I had to expand an existing timber frame for vines to grow for shade.

We then went to an ‘Aroid Society’ field day at Steve Flood’s Nursery, this was of great interest to us as we have bought many plants from him over the years, as we did on this visit.
We then went to give a presentation to ‘Redbank Palms Village’ retirement village, only a small turnout but they enjoyed the presentation.

Our youngest son returned from a holiday in Bali where he unfortunately contracted ‘Dengue fever’ and had to be hospitalized here in Brisbane, good news is that he has now fully recovered.
We then hosted a bus trip from ‘Albany Creek garden Club’, it was a bit of a rush as they had to be at Mt Cootha for lunch at a certain time but it all went well.

Two projects completed during the month as well as all the other garden duties one has to do.

Pity the only place we can get 15 mill bark for the Bromeliads is Centenary Landscapes at Darra. At least I had help unloading.
Some of the plants in May.
